Terry S. Callaghan
vCard

Terry Callaghan's focus is in the procurement, licensing and enforcement of patents for mechanical, optical, electrical and computer hardware and software-related inventions, as well as the registration and enforcement of trademarks. Additionally, Mr. Callaghan has negotiated settlements of many Internet domain name disputes and has drafted many software license agreements.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Callaghan gained invaluable experience as a patent examiner in the United States Patent and Trademark Office. As a result of this experience, he thoroughly understands the interworkings and procedures of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. More importantly, he has an inside perspective of what patent examiners look for when deciding whether an invention is patentable. As an examiner, Mr. Callaghan examined patent applications in the optical, electro-optical, and computer arts, including holography, interference films, scanners, complex lens systems, filters, ophthalmic lenses, microscopes, diffraction gratings, and optical beam splitters, mixers and combiners.

After leaving the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Mr. Callaghan practiced in Washington, D.C. at a prestigious patent firm where he prosecuted well over a hundred patent applications for companies such as Westinghouse, Toshiba, Xerox, Fuji Xerox, and Hughes Communications. He also worked on several patent infringement suits.

Mr. Callaghan received his Juris Doctorate (patent track) from George Mason University School of Law in Virginia, after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. Mr. Callaghan is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. He is also admitted to the bars of the State of Michigan and the District of Columbia.

Mr. Callaghan is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Bar Association, the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the Michigan Patent Law Association, and the Grand Rapids Bar Association.
