Patent Agent

Courtney Lapekes

Dr. Ryan Flaherty is a registered patent agent with the firm. Before joining Price Heneveld, Ryan earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Grand Valley State University and both a Ph. D. in Chemistry and M.S. in Patent Law from the University of Notre Dame. As a Ph. D. candidate, he conducted research using capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence and mass spectrometry detection. His research brought together aspects of chemistry, biology, and engineering. He developed instrumentation for the advancement of analytical chemistry as it pertains to biological systems.

While at Notre Dame he published four peer-reviewed articles. Three of those articles describe novel technologies that are the subject of patent applications. Additionally, two of the developed technologies have attracted commercial interest and have resulted in licensing agreements. At Notre Dame, Ryan was the inaugural chair of two committees, the Joint Analytical Sciences Meeting and the Student Selected Speaker committee.

Before pursuing his graduate degrees, Ryan gained valuable laboratory experience during his internships with industrial companies Amway (Ada, MI) and Cayman Chemical Company (Ann Arbor, MI). His undergraduate research and internship experiences utilized chromatographic and electrophoretic separation techniques to develop methods for analyzing complex mixtures.

A native of Metro Detroit, he is passionate about the automotive industry. This passion has manifest itself in his work on a 1964 Mustang, an LS1 engine transplant into a 1994 Firebird, and ¼ mile drag racing at Milan Dragway in Southeast Michigan.
