Collin Kerkstra is an associate of our firm and is registered to practice law within the state of Michigan and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Collin attended Grand Rapids Community College and then Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. At Michigan Technological University, Collin was an executive board member of the Alternative Energy Enterprise, and he earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with a minor in aerospace engineering. During this time, his work experience included manufacturing and product testing. Collin also worked as a packaging engineering associate after graduating.

Collin returned to the Lower Peninsula in 2021 to attend Michigan State University College of Law. At Michigan State, he was a member of the Intellectual Property Law Society. Collin also worked at the Law College’s Equitable Entrepreneurship and Innovation Law Clinic, where he, under a licensed supervising attorney, provided IP-related legal services to members of the Michigan community, including contractual counseling and hosting a community legal workshop. Collin began clerking at Price Heneveld in 2022 during his second year of law school.

Since starting full-time with the firm in 2024, Collin has gained experience with patent application drafting, Office Action strategy, PTAB appeal briefs, opinion work regarding patentability, freedom to operate, and patent validity, and working with clients and inventors throughout the patent preparation and prosecution process. Collin is a member of the Grand Rapids Bar Young Lawyers Section and is eager to build his practice here in Michigan.
